The two constructions
Flexible silicone masks are made from a soft, bendable material with LEDs embedded throughout. They conform to the contours of the face and are usually held on with a strap.
Rigid masks use a hard shell, typically plastic, shaped to an average face. They sit against the face at fixed points rather than conforming to it.
Hybrids exist: rigid shells with flexible edges, or segmented panels that articulate. They inherit some of each set of trade-offs.
The choice is not a matter of one being better. It is a genuine engineering trade-off with consequences in five areas.
Distance from the skin
This is the consequence people miss, and it is the most important one.
Irradiance falls off with distance from the source. A flexible mask that follows the contours of the face holds its LEDs at a roughly consistent, short distance across the whole surface. A rigid shell sized for an average face sits close at the points where it touches and further away everywhere else — around the nose, under the cheekbones, along the jaw.
The specification did not change. What reaches your skin in those regions did. This is why measured irradiance at a stated distance is worth so much more than a headline figure, and why fit is not a comfort issue that can be separated from delivered dose.
It also means a rigid mask on a face significantly smaller or larger than the shape it was designed for is a meaningfully different device than the same mask on the face it fits.
Coverage
Flexible masks generally wrap further around the contours, reaching the sides of the face and the jawline more readily. Rigid masks are more likely to leave the perimeter untreated but tend to hold a consistent, predictable geometry across the front of the face.
Neither is universally better. What matters is which zones each one actually reaches, which is why we assess coverage against a fixed zone list on the physical unit rather than accepting a manufacturer diagram.
Comfort and practicality
Flexible masks are usually lighter and can often be worn while moving around, which for many people is the difference between using a device consistently and not. They can feel warm and close against the skin, and some people dislike the enclosed sensation.
Rigid masks distribute weight through fewer contact points, which can mean pressure on the bridge of the nose or the forehead. They are more likely to require sitting or lying still. Some people much prefer having no material touching most of their face.
This is personal, it is hard to predict from a photograph, and it is a strong argument for buying somewhere with a real return window.
Durability
Flexible materials are subject to repeated bending, which over time stresses the internal connections between emitters. Rigid shells do not flex but can crack if dropped, and the hinge or strap mountings are common failure points.
Durability claims from either camp deserve scepticism, including ours: we can only report what we observed in the period we held a device, and our reviews state that period rather than implying we know how a mask ages over five years.
Cleaning
A device that touches your face repeatedly needs cleaning. Silicone is generally straightforward to wipe down and non-porous. Rigid masks have seams, vents and control housings where residue collects, and cleaning instructions vary in quality.
Check what the manual says about cleaning agents before using anything on either type — some materials react badly to alcohol.
Which suits which buyer
A flexible mask tends to suit you if you want to move around during a session, you have a face size away from the average, or coverage of the jaw and sides matters to you.
A rigid mask tends to suit you if you dislike material against your face, you want a fixed and predictable geometry, or you prefer a device that sits away from the skin.
Either can be the right answer. The specification differences between two well-made masks of opposite construction are usually smaller than the difference between a mask that fits your face and one that does not.
What we record
For every mask: the form factor, the materials, weight, strap adjustment range, how the mask sat on more than one face size, where pressure points occurred, and what we could establish about the distance the emitters sit from the skin. Those observations sit in the fit and coverage categories, which together carry 30 of the 100 points in our scoring — more than any other pair.
