What this site provides

Red Light Therapy Mask Reviews publishes general educational information and product comparisons about consumer red light therapy face masks. We measure and describe what devices do as pieces of hardware: which wavelengths they emit, how much light reaches the skin, how much of the face they cover, how they fit, how hot they get, what they cost and what their warranties say.

What this site does not provide

This site does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and it does not provide individualised recommendations for any person’s health.

Specifically, nothing on this site should be read as:

  • a diagnosis of any skin or medical condition;
  • a recommendation to use, or not use, a device for any condition;
  • a claim that any device treats, cures, prevents or mitigates any disease;
  • a promise of any cosmetic or clinical outcome, including wrinkle reduction, acne improvement, collagen production, scar improvement or pain relief;
  • a substitute for consulting a qualified healthcare professional.

Please consult a professional

Talk to a qualified healthcare professional — a physician, dermatologist or other appropriately licensed clinician — before starting to use a red light therapy device, particularly if any of the following apply to you.

  • You take medication that increases photosensitivity. Several common classes of medication do, including some antibiotics, some acne treatments, some diuretics and some antipsychotics. This is not a complete list.
  • You have a photosensitive condition, or a history of photosensitivity reactions.
  • You have an eye condition, retinal disease, or have had recent eye surgery.
  • You have a skin condition affecting the treatment area, or a history of skin cancer.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have an implanted medical device.
  • You are considering use on or near a child.
  • You have any condition you would want a clinician to know about before adding a new device to your routine.

Suitability varies from person to person. We cannot assess yours, and a product comparison cannot substitute for someone who can.

On regulatory language

Marketing in this category frequently blurs three different things. We do not.

  • FDA approval applies to a small number of high-risk devices and is not what most consumer LED masks have.
  • FDA clearance (commonly via the 510(k) pathway) means a device was found substantially equivalent to an existing legally marketed device for a stated intended use. It is not the same as approval, and it is specific to the claims made.
  • FDA registration or listing means a facility or device is on a list. It is an administrative step. It is not an endorsement, a clearance or an approval of any kind.

A wavelength cannot be “FDA approved”. A specific device may hold a specific clearance for a specific stated purpose, and where we can verify the actual document we will say so and cite it. Where we cannot, we report the claim as a claim.

Safety in use

General points worth knowing, none of which are specific to you:

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on session length and frequency. More is not better.
  • Use whatever eye protection the manufacturer specifies, and be sceptical of a device that specifies none.
  • Stop using a device and seek advice if you experience pain, burning, persistent redness, headaches, visual disturbance or any reaction that concerns you.
  • These devices produce heat as well as light. Report any device that becomes uncomfortably hot to the manufacturer.

Our guide on safety considerations covers this in more detail — as general information, not as advice about you.

No liability

Information on this site is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind. Decisions about your health, and about buying and using any device, are yours to make in consultation with an appropriately qualified professional. See our terms of use.
