Talk to a professional first if any of these apply
There are circumstances in which the sensible order is: ask a clinician, then buy a device. Among them:
- You take medication that increases photosensitivity. Several common drug classes do. Ask a pharmacist or physician about the specific medications you take rather than relying on a general list.
- You have a photosensitive condition, or a history of photosensitivity reactions.
- You have an eye condition, retinal disease, or have had recent eye surgery.
- You have a skin condition affecting the area, or a history of skin cancer.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have an implanted medical device.
- You are considering use on a child.
- You are treating a condition rather than pursuing a cosmetic goal — in which case what you need is a diagnosis and a treatment plan, and a consumer device is not either of those.
None of this means a device is dangerous for you. It means the question is outside what a product comparison can answer.
Eye protection
This is the safety topic most worth attention, and the one where devices differ most.
Masks handle the eye area in several ways: opaque built-in eye shields, separate goggles supplied in the box, cut-outs that leave the eyes exposed, or nothing in particular. Some manufacturers instruct that eyes be kept closed; some supply goggles and require them; some say very little.
Practical points:
- Follow the manufacturer’s eye guidance for your specific device. It is written for that device’s output and geometry.
- If goggles are supplied, use them. They were included for a reason.
- Closed eyelids are not opaque. They attenuate light substantially but not completely.
- Be more careful with blue-light modes. Considerations around blue light exposure differ from red and near-infrared.
- Near-infrared is invisible, so the absence of visible brightness tells you nothing about whether output is present.
A device whose documentation does not address eye protection at all is a device whose manufacturer has skipped an obvious question, and we score it accordingly.
Heat
LED masks produce heat as well as light. A degree of warmth is normal and is not by itself a fault.
What is worth noticing is heat that becomes uncomfortable, heat that is concentrated in one spot rather than spread, or a device that gets hotter over a session without an automatic cut-off. We measure surface and skin-contact temperature over a full session precisely because this is difficult to judge from a specification.
If a device becomes uncomfortably hot in use, stop, and tell the manufacturer.
What device documentation should include
When assessing a manufacturer’s safety documentation, we look for:
- Explicit eye protection guidance.
- A list of contraindications.
- Guidance about photosensitising medications.
- Session length and frequency limits.
- What to do if a reaction occurs.
- Cleaning instructions, since the device touches skin repeatedly.
- Automatic shut-off behaviour.
Missing items are recorded in the review rather than assumed to be covered elsewhere.
Regulatory terms, precisely
This category is full of language designed to sound like regulatory endorsement. Three distinct things get conflated:
FDA approval applies to a limited set of high-risk devices. Most consumer LED masks do not have it, and a marketing page saying “FDA approved” about such a device is a claim worth checking directly.
FDA clearance (commonly 510(k)) means a device was found substantially equivalent to an existing legally marketed device, for a specific stated intended use. It is not approval, and it does not extend to claims outside that stated use.
FDA registration or listing means a facility or device appears on a list. It is an administrative step and is not an endorsement of safety or effectiveness of any kind.
And a wavelength cannot be approved or cleared. Only a device, for a stated use, can be.
Where a manufacturer claims a clearance, we ask for the document. Where we can verify it, we report what it actually covers. Where we cannot, we report the claim as a claim.
Stop and seek advice if
- You experience pain, burning or persistent redness.
- You notice visual disturbance during or after a session.
- You develop a rash or reaction in the treated area.
- You get headaches that coincide with use.
- Anything happens that concerns you.
Then talk to a healthcare professional. Report the problem to the manufacturer too — that is how device faults get identified.
